Port of Townsville Enhances Quayside Terminal to Welcome More Large Cruise Ships

The Port of Townsville’s Quayside Terminal is undergoing significant upgrades to accommodate the anticipated increase in passengers and crew from Large Class cruise ships during the 2024-2025 cruise season.

Enhancements include expanding the bus zone to accommodate 12 coaches, up from the current four, and the construction of a dedicated kiss ‘n’ ride area. Additional improvements involve new seating, shade structures, and landscaping.

A record 24 cruise ships are scheduled to dock at Townsville in the 2024-2025 season, marking the first time Large Class vessels will visit the port. This influx is expected to bring 28,756 passengers and 13,877 crew to Townsville, contributing ~$10 million to the local economy.

In line with the Port’s commitment to sustainability, an additional $3 million has been allocated to renewable energy projects at the terminal. Recently, 430 solar panels and 60 battery banks were installed on the Quayside Terminal’s roof, expected to generate 279 MWh of electricity annually, covering 10% of the Port’s yearly electricity consumption.

The ongoing works, scheduled for completion before the arrival of the Silver Muse on November 3, 2024, the first ship of the season, are being carried out during daylight hours from Monday to Saturday.
