MSC Musica Sets Sail for Adventure: Sub-Antarctic Islands Cruise Announced for 2025

MSC Cruises’ MSC Musica is planning an exclusive sub-Antarctic journey to the Prince Edward Islands as part of its 2024-25 South Africa season.

This distinctive voyage, organized in collaboration with BirdLife South Africa, a non-profit focused on bird preservation, is set for January 24, 2025.

The cruise will commence and conclude in Durban, lasting seven nights, and will emphasize wildlife conservation and bird observation, particularly around the Prince Edward Islands Marine Protected Area.

BirdLife is in the process of acquiring a special permit from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, enabling the ship to sail close to Marion Island, the archipelago’s better-known part.

Though landing on the island will not be possible, plans are in place for MSC Musica to navigate within one kilometer of its shores.

The ship will host over 50 specialists in seabirds and marine mammals to guide guests in observing the rich wildlife.

Among the seabirds expected to be seen are King Penguins, Wandering Albatrosses, and various species of Petrels, BirdLife South Africa reports.

A range of educational talks is planned, along with a unique workshop led by the renowned seabird expert, author, and illustrator, Peter Harrison.

Initially available only to BirdLife South Africa contributors and members, bookings for the cruise are now open to the wider public.

All proceeds from this cruise will support the Mouse-Free Marion initiative, a joint effort by BirdLife South Africa and governmental bodies to revive Marion Island’s ecosystems for its native seabird populations.

For its 2024-25 season, MSC Musica will be operating from South Africa, offering local travelers various cruise options ranging from three to twelve nights, embarking from Durban and Cape Town.
