Law Enforcement Family Member Arrested for Alleged Rape on Cruise Ship
A man from Texas with familial ties to law enforcement was taken into custody in Florida upon the arrival of his cruise ship after being accused by a woman of raping her during the voyage.
The apprehension of Juan Campos, 28, occurred as the Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas docked at Port Everglades this past weekend. This followed an accusation by a 20-year-old woman who claimed Campos assaulted her on August 28, reported Local 10 News.
According to a police report viewed by the news outlet, the woman asserted that Campos forcefully penetrated her with an unspecified object against her consent, causing her pain and prompting her to push him away and demand he stop.
The report further indicated that Campos subsequently attempted to coerce her into performing oral sex and tried to penetrate her once more when his initial endeavor was thwarted.
However, Campos’ attorney argued that the sexual encounter was consensual and stated that his client ceased his actions when requested to do so.
“It was a typical cruise scenario, he was there with friends, they met some individuals onboard, and suddenly, he finds himself accused of this charge,” Ed Hoeg, his attorney, explained to Local 10.
“According to what I understand, they started kissing, and things began to escalate. When the woman clearly told him to stop, he did,” Hoeg stated.
Campos, who hails from Houston and comes from a family involved in law enforcement, has his family taken aback by the accusations of rape, the attorney reported to the news station.
“The family insists he has a clean record and describe him as a good person who was merely on vacation. They are astonished by the accusations,” Hoeg remarked.
Following the incident, Campos was detained on the ship and taken to Broward County Main Jail. He is currently held there, with a bond set at $20,000 by the court.
These claims arise as another case surfaces where a woman was granted more than $12 million by a cruise company after accusing one of its crew members of rape during a 2018 trip. This followed a protracted legal confrontation.
Last week, Judge Kathleen Williams ruled in this case, detailing how on Dec. 1, 2018, Carnival employee Fredy Anggara supposedly tricked the complainant into a closet, locked it, and then assaulted her on board the Carnival Miracle, as stated in the lawsuit.
Jurors awarded her $10 million in 2022, and following Carnival’s challenge of that decision, Williams secured an additional $2 million, as per court documents.
Anggara has not been arrested related to the incident, and he has not been named as a defendant in the lawsuit.
