SS United States: Recent Burglary Damage Complicates Plans for Artificial Reef Transformation

Authorities in Philadelphia have reported that the historic SS United States has sustained damage following a theft at her current location at Pier 80 on Christopher Columbus Boulevard.

Investigators have revealed that tools and batteries were taken, leading to property damage. The case remains under investigation, with no arrests made as of yet.

This incident occurs at a time when the famed ocean liner is gaining attention due to an ambitious initiative aimed at converting the ship into the largest artificial reef in the world. A proposed US$10 million deal, spearheaded by Okaloosa County in Florida, plans to tow the 1,000-foot-long SS United States from Philadelphia to the waters near Destin-Fort Walton Beach, where it would be intentionally sunk to create a unique scuba diving site.

Furthermore, the agreement includes plans for a land-based museum and an interactive experience to be developed by the SS United States Conservancy, ensuring the preservation of the ship’s rich history.

Once a formidable symbol of maritime prowess during the Cold War, the ship still retains the record for the fastest transatlantic crossing, a title she earned over 70 years ago.
