Those who have secured a booking on the extraordinary Icon of the Seas will be pleased to know that the upcoming sailing is set to proceed as planned, after the ship underwent emergency repairs.

Although the cruise line has maintained communication with the guests since the vessel was temporarily taken out of service for unplanned maintenance, the details shared were somewhat limited, merely stating, “As we get closer, we’ll provide you with updates on our progress.”

Now, Royal Caribbean has informed its guests who are booked on this voyage that the repair work has been completed, confirming that the departure scheduled for October 5, 2024, will take place as intended, following the cancellation of the September 28 sailing.

“Here’s a brief update about our forthcoming sailing…” the announcement read. “We recently carried out some unexpected maintenance on the Icon of the Seas, and we are pleased to announce that it has been completed!”

The cruise line has not disclosed the specifics of the “unexpected maintenance,” but generally, a ship is not taken out of service for such repairs unless essential systems are at stake, such as those related to propulsion or safety.

Nonetheless, the necessary work has been successfully finalized while the vessel has been docked in Freeport – the nearest shipyard equipped for such repairs – and she is set to return to Miami on Saturday.

“The ship is prepared, our crew has missed our guests, and we eagerly anticipate resuming our regular itineraries starting with our sailing on October 5, 2024,” the message concluded.

The upcoming cruise features a 7-night journey through the Eastern Caribbean, with stops scheduled at St. Kitts on Tuesday, St. Thomas on Wednesday, and Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s exclusive Bahamian getaway, on Friday. Currently, there are no changes anticipated for the itinerary.

The ship, weighing 248,663 gross tons, is equipped to accommodate 5,610 passengers at double occupancy and can hold up to 7,600 guests at full capacity with all beds occupied. Specifically tailored for families and travelers of all generations, the vessel often operates well beyond its double occupancy number, assuring all guests that the upcoming cruise will proceed as scheduled.

Despite Icon of the Seas being less than a year in operation – having launched on January 27, 2024 – this “unplanned maintenance” marks the second technical issue the ship has encountered.

In May, the vessel suffered a notable power outage that affected its propulsion, lighting, water pumps, elevators, and various other systems. Although the outage itself was brief, it required several hours before all systems were fully operational again.

Even with extensive pre-inaugural testing, sea trials, and shakedowns, it’s not uncommon for newly launched ships to encounter minor adjustments or incidents as they initiate full passenger services.

However, it is noteworthy for such issues to lead to widespread and seemingly serious technical complications, as appears to be the case with Icon of the Seas. Being an entirely new class of vessel – and the largest ship globally – it poses unique challenges for engineers as it begins its regular operations.

Some passengers have expressed concern that the issues faced by Icon of the Seas may parallel those experienced by Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Vista, which encountered propulsion issues in August, resulting in itinerary changes, missed port calls, and ultimately, the ship being taken out of service for repairs.

Despite the recent troubles faced by Carnival Vista, which only resulted in the cancellation of one cruise, the issues with its propulsion seem to be extensive and persistent within the Vista-class ships. Some passengers on Royal Caribbean ships are expressing concerns that the unexpected problems with Icon of the Seas may reflect similar challenges for this new class of vessel.

It is to be hoped that the recent repairs have effectively resolved any serious issues, allowing Icon of the Seas to navigate smoothly and offer incredible experiences to countless guests each week.
