Cruise Ship Scandal: Investigation Reveals Maggots and Decomposing Bird Amidst Horror Stories

A shocking find of a deceased bird covered in wriggling maggots on a cruise liner’s grill has emerged from an investigation.

The newest findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have highlighted the cleanliness standards on the world’s most luxurious ocean vessels.

Among the various ships examined, each one received a ‘satisfactory’ grade, boasting scores of 85 or above. In contrast, Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanseatic Inspiration notably underperformed, securing only a 62 out of 100 in its September review.

Inspections conducted by the CDC uncovered a series of infractions, including a disturbing incident where a dead bird infested with maggots was discovered resting on an outdoor grill.

The inspection report from the CDC noted, “The area beneath the outdoor grill was heavily contaminated with water, debris, feathers, a deceased bird, and maggots. This site was utilized the day before the inspection,” as stated in Item 33.

Furthermore, the CDC’s findings pointed out, “Pest management and monitoring were severely lacking, which resulted in significant pest intrusion into food preparation areas. Multiple live and dead insects, a deceased bird, and live maggots were discovered in different food zones aboard the vessel.

Nevertheless, the pest management logs claimed that there were no recorded pest problems on the ship.”

Inspectors have pointed out numerous concerns aboard a cruise ship, stating, “There is no record of disinfection for the swimming pool’s hair and lint strainer between September 8 and September 21.”

Furthermore, they reported that “supervisors were not effectively monitoring critical and high-risk food processes” and described the “potwash operations as chaotic, disorganized, and not meeting compliance standards.”

The inspection also revealed the presence of “live flies” in various locations, including the lido potwash clean storage rack and the pool bar cold sink. Additionally, dead insects were found in several food-related areas.

Inspectors also noted the lack of anti-rat guards on the mooring lines when they boarded the ship at 8.30 am after it had arrived the previous day. These guards play an essential role in keeping rats from gaining access to the vessel.

“The incident that occurred last month does not represent the operational excellence our ships embody. We took immediate action to rectify any issues, conducted a comprehensive investigation into the causes, and provided a corrective report to the appropriate authorities.

“An expert working group, consisting of both internal and external specialists, is overseeing and facilitating the enactment of measures to ensure our high standards are upheld at all times.”

Five cruise liners, namely Caribbean Princess, Carnival Breeze, Evrima, Kydon, and MSC Magnifica, have just made it through health assessments, securing a score of 86 out of 100.

Furthermore, numerous disease outbreaks have emerged on cruise ships during 2024. Notably, there was a salmonella outbreak on Radiance of the Seas in late September, which affected 8.29 percent of those onboard.

P&O Cruises’ vessel Arcadia also faced a norovirus outbreak that lasted from September 3 to October 3, impacting 5.57 percent of passengers.

In addition, this year has seen norovirus outbreaks on six other cruise ships, which include Celebrity Summit, Sapphire Princess, Radiance of the Seas, Koningsdam, Queen Victoria, and Celebrity Constellation. There was also an E. coli outbreak on the Silver Nova, where 28 out of 633 passengers reported falling ill.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) plays a crucial role in safeguarding the nation from health, safety, and security threats, addressing these concerns both at home and globally.
