Antarctica21 Partners with HIF Global to Pioneer E-Fuels in Sustainable Travel

Antarctica21 has announced a new partnership with HIF Global, an e-fuel manufacturer, making it the first company in the cruise industry to incorporate synthetic gasoline into its operations.

This exclusive agreement signifies a major advancement toward promoting sustainable tourism in Antarctica, according to a recent press release.

E-fuel, a synthetic product derived from green hydrogen combined with recycled CO2, serves as a viable alternative since it is chemically identical to traditional gasoline.

As reported by Antarctica21, the use of e-fuel necessitates no alterations to engines or current infrastructure, thus facilitating global decarbonization efforts.

The collaboration marks an important milestone in Antarctica21’s initiative to transition exclusively to e-fuels in its operations.

“We are thrilled to play a leading role in the search for alternative energy options. The strategic alliance between Antarctica21 and HIF fits seamlessly with our sustainability objectives, which include energy-efficient practices and a thorough carbon offset and certification program,” stated Jaime Vásquez, president of Antarctica21.

“By introducing e-fuel into our operations, we are laying the groundwork for a more sustainable future for Antarctic tourism and fostering innovation in marine fuel options.”

On October 25, 2024, in a ceremony held in Punta Arenas, southern Chile, Antarctica21 and HIF Global formalized an agreement to test e-gasoline in the operational zodiacs of Antarctica21’s Magellan Explorer.

In subsequent years, Antarctica21 intends to broaden the application of e-fuels, incorporating synthetic Marine Gas Oil (e-MGO) for the main engines of Magellan Explorer, alongside synthetic jet fuel for aerial operations.

The e-fuel utilized in this initiative is sourced locally from HIF Global’s Haru Oni facility in Punta Arenas, situated in Chile’s Magallanes Region, where the company manufactures e-fuels for various industrial uses.

Antarctica21 noted that the innovative model of the plant could establish Chile as a pivotal player in the global energy transition.

“This partnership represents a tangible commitment to decarbonizing the planet. Our e-fuels can effect change today, enhancing regional tourism while contributing to a sustainable future on the White Continent,” remarked Víctor Turpaud, CEO of HIF Latam.
