Norwegian Dawn: A Milestone in Sustainability as NCL Fuels with 100% Waste-Based Biofuel in IJmuiden
Norwegian Cruise Line’s ship, Norwegian Dawn, recently completed a refueling with a 100% waste-based biofuel blend at IJmuiden Cruise Terminal in the Netherlands. This sustainable B30 biofuel, provided by Dutch supplier GoodFuels, is derived entirely from certified waste and residue feedstocks, marking a significant step towards greener maritime operations.
The biofuel blend is designed to reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions by 80-90% compared to traditional marine diesel, all without the need for modifications to the ship’s engines. This initiative aligns with Norwegian Cruise Line’s ‘Sail and Sustain’ program, which aims to use renewable fuels across an extensive portion of its fleet.
Norwegian Cruise Line views biodiesel as a practical transitional fuel that can facilitate current decarbonization efforts while longer-term sustainable solutions are developed. Earlier in the year, other vessels in the fleet, such as Norwegian Escape, Seven Seas Voyager, and Oceania Riviera, were similarly refueled with biofuel during their stop at Port Barcelona in Spain.
