Sailing Green: Roma Cruise Terminal Launches Sustainable Cruise Program
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy has launched its Second Edition of the Sustainable Cruise Tourism Management Program at the Roma Cruise Terminal’s Terminal Amerigo Vespucci. This initiative was developed in collaboration with the Indian Ocean Region Association (IORA) and involved partnerships with ForMare and Confitarma, the Italian Shipowners’ Confederation.
Participants included officials from several countries in the Indian Ocean Region, such as the Port Authorities of Mauritius, Tanzania, and Kenya, along with representatives from Thailand’s Ministry of Transport and the chairman of the Port of Cochin in India.
The program was opened by Eugenio Sgrò, the Italian National Focal Point for IORA, who emphasized the importance of capacity building across various aspects of the blue economy, particularly in sustainable cruise tourism. Over five days, the course provided participants with insights into sustainable practices for cruise terminals. Experts from various organizations, including the Port Authority, the Italian Coast Guard, and Costa Crociere, led discussions and lectures.
The program also included field visits to cruise terminals, the Costa Toscana, Civitavecchia Forest, a Fruit Terminal warehouse, and the Coast Guard office, allowing participants to see sustainable practices in action.
