SunStone Unveils the Douglas Mawson: A New Era in Exploration Technology
SunStone Maritime Group has officially launched its latest expedition cruise vessel, the Douglas Mawson, completing the Infinity Class series with this seventh and final addition. The launch ceremony took place on November 29, 2024, at the China Merchants Heavy Industry shipyard in Haimen, China.
The excitement from SunStone was palpable as they celebrated this milestone, looking forward to the vessel’s forthcoming sea trials scheduled for next year. The Douglas Mawson will have the capacity to accommodate up to 170 passengers alongside a crew of 102. It is designed with IceClass 1A and Polar Class 6 specifications, enabling it to operate safely and efficiently in challenging maritime environments.
Noteworthy features of the Douglas Mawson include systems for Safe Return to Port, Dynamic Positioning, and zero-speed stabilizers. The vessel will also be equipped with various amenities such as a swimming pool, multiple dining options, lounges, a library, a gym, and a spa to enhance the onboard experience for guests.
Set for delivery in the coming year, the Douglas Mawson will operate under long-term charter agreements. It is slated to be chartered to Aurora Expeditions and is expected to embark on its inaugural voyage in the fall of 2025.
