Coast Guard Performs Dramatic Medevac of Woman from Cruise Ship off California Coast
When a 66-year-old woman aboard the Holland America Line’s cruise ship Koningsdam exhibited symptoms of a stroke, the U.S. Coast Guard quickly mobilized a dramatic rescue mission. This incident occurred early on Friday morning, around 7:12 a.m., approximately 280 miles south of the U.S.-Mexico maritime boundary.
The cruise ship’s crew contacted the Coast Guard, prompting the launch of two air crews from San Diego and Sacramento. Upon reaching the ship, the Coast Guard personnel safely hoisted the woman into a helicopter.
She was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla in San Diego and is currently in stable condition. The Coast Guard has not disclosed her identity.
Lt. Brady Stepan, a pilot from Air Station San Diego, remarked, "Rescues like this are exactly what our crews train for. Through coordination from the command center and outstanding support from our C-27 cover aircraft crew, we were able to get the patient to higher-level care.
