Funchal Sees Increase in Overnight Call Activity: What You Need to Know
The Port of Funchal is witnessing a significant increase in the number of cruise ships making overnight calls. The Madeira Port Administration (APRAM, SA) has projected that the total number of overnight visits will reach 73 by the end of the year. This increase is noteworthy as the last two months of the previous year only saw 14 overnight stays, a number already matched by the first week of December this year.
With additional calls scheduled until December 31, 2024, Funchal will have 34 overnight stops, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing local tourism and revenue. Paula Cabaço, chair of APRAM’s board, explained that overnight calls contribute significantly not just in terms of revenue through increased fees, but also in promoting the destination itself.
The strategic location of the port, close to the city, encourages cruise lines to extend their stays in Funchal, allowing passengers to enjoy the city at night. Additionally, in late November, the port earned the “Best Cruise Terminal in the World for Sustainability” award at the World Cruise Awards, reinforcing its status as an attractive destination. Madeira had previously been awarded “Europe’s Best Cruise Destination” for two consecutive years in 2022 and 2023.
In 2023, Funchal welcomed 279 cruise ship calls, and for the first time, the destination exceeded 624,000 passengers, marking a remarkable 51 percent increase compared to the previous year. The plans for 2024 include intensifying promotional efforts with cruise lines to highlight Madeira’s diverse attractions.
