€32 Million Investment Boosts Electrification Efforts at Le Havre Port in France
HAROPA’s Port Le Havre, located in Paris, is moving forward with its shore power supply initiative to support EU sustainability objectives. The project will retrofit three quays with onshore power supply (OPS) capabilities, with the Pierre Callet berth scheduled to be operational by May 2025. The Roger Meunier and Joannes Couvert berths are set to follow in 2026.
Each berth will be equipped with plugs that can deliver 13 MW, contributing to a combined capacity of 30 MW across all three quays. This ambitious project represents a total investment of €32 million, which includes €13.6 million from the French Government’s ecological transition plan and €900,000 from the Research Fund for Coal and Steel. Preparatory work involved connecting to the public electricity grid managed by ENEDIS, requiring the installation of 3 km of 20,000-volt cables and a 40 MVA transformer, costing €5.6 million.
This OPS project adheres to European initiatives such as AFIR and FuelEU Maritime, which aim for maritime electrification by 2030. It also aligns with HAROPA Port’s strategic priorities for 2020-2025, emphasizing sustainable port operations.
Additionally, Le Havre Croisieres, the cruise terminal operator, is planning a major development to enhance the port’s capacity and attractiveness. By early 2026, three new cruise terminals will be completed, allowing the port to service the world’s largest cruise ships, accommodating vessels with the capacity of up to 6,000 passengers.
These terminals are designed for emission-free operations, incorporating energy-efficient systems and photovoltaic roofing. This development aims to elevate the customer experience, attract tourists to Le Havre and its vicinity, and foster growth in cruise traffic.
