Mein Schiff Relax: TUI’s Newest Vessel Successfully Completes LNG Sea Trials

The latest addition to TUI Cruises’ fleet, Mein Schiff Relax, is making significant strides toward completion at the Fincantieri shipyard located in Monfalcone, Italy. Recently, the ship successfully completed its third sea trial, during which it operated using liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the first time.

The vessel is projected to be delivered in early 2025, with its maiden voyage scheduled for March 2nd, 2025, and a christening event set to occur on April 9th, 2025, in Malaga, Spain. The focus of the latest sea trial was to evaluate the ship’s LNG propulsion system. TUI Cruises reported that the fuel system underwent thorough testing, including the bunkering of LNG and fuel cooling to ensure reliable performance. Subsequent test runs confirmed the efficiency of the system under simulated operational conditions, marking a crucial step in implementing sustainable energy practices onboard.

This major milestone follows an initial sea trial in October, which primarily looked at the ship’s overall performance and maneuverability. Collectively, these trials highlight Mein Schiff Relax‘s readiness to utilize dual-fuel engines capable of functioning on marine diesel as well as low-emission bio- and e-LNG fuels.

Georgios Vagiannis, TUI Cruises’ Director of Newbuild, emphasized the vessel’s commitment to sustainability, indicating that Mein Schiff Relax signifies not only the introduction of a new ship class but also substantial progress in sustainable maritime operations.

As the flagship of TUI Cruises’ new InTUItion class, Mein Schiff Relax boasts several innovations compared to its predecessors:

  • LNG Propulsion: This system supports the integration of bio- and e-LNG, aligning with TUI Cruises’ climate-neutral cruising goals.
  • Azipod Propeller Nacelles: These advancements enhance maneuverability, promoting improved operational efficiency.
  • High-Tech Navigation Systems: The integration of advanced technologies on the bridge bolsters safety and navigation.

In addition to technical upgrades, the ship features redesigned outdoor spaces, new bar and dining options, and enhanced entertainment facilities.

After its debut in spring 2025, Mein Schiff Relax will initially operate itineraries in the western Mediterranean before transitioning to the Canary Islands for its first winter season during 2025–2026, positioning it as a pioneer in sustainable cruising for TUI Cruises.
