Explora I Makes Waves: Yucatan Joins High-End Cruise Itineraries with Its First Docking in Progreso

The luxury cruise ship Explora I made its inaugural docking in Puerto Progreso, Mexico on December 21, 2024. This event is a significant milestone for Yucatan as it seeks to establish itself as a premier destination for high-end cruise lines aiming to provide travelers with unique cultural and natural experiences.

Operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) through its subsidiary Explora Journeys, the Explora I arrived carrying 394 passengers and 643 crew members. The guests enjoyed a 12-hour visit filled with immersive experiences, including explorations of Mayan culture and visits to the region’s archaeological sites and pristine beaches along Yucatan’s stunning coastline.

A ceremonial plaque exchange occurred between Captain Pietro Sinisi and local tourism officials, including Dario Flota Ocampo, the Secretary of Tourism Development, representing the State Governor. Municipal and federal authorities from the Port of Progreso also attended the ceremony.

As part of its 2024-2025 winter schedule, MSC Explora I will continue to serve Progreso. The ship began its journey from Miami, Florida on December 16, following an 8-day Caribbean itinerary that included stops in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, and Progreso.

The Progreso area continues to draw cruise tourists to major attractions such as the archaeological wonders of Chichen Itza and Uxmal, the historic city of Merida, and local beach clubs. Yucatan’s cruise sector is on track to conclude December 2024 with the welcome of 20 ships, highlighting its rising stature as a destination for both cultural and leisure tourism.
