Mein Schiff Relax: TUI’s Newest Ship Successfully Completes LNG Sea Trials
The construction of the Mein Schiff Relax, the latest addition to TUI Cruises’ fleet, is making significant progress at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. The vessel has recently reached a key milestone by successfully completing its third sea trial, which was notable for its demonstration of liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion for the first time.
Scheduled for delivery in early 2025, Mein Schiff Relax is set to embark on its maiden voyage on March 2, 2025. The ship will be formally christened on April 9, 2025, in Malaga, Spain.
The recent sea trial was focused on assessing the ship’s LNG propulsion system. TUI Cruises confirmed extensive evaluations of the fuel system, which included the bunkering of LNG and thorough checks on fuel cooling to guarantee flawless operations. Subsequent operational tests confirmed the system’s performance, highlighting a pivotal advancement in sustainable energy solutions onboard. This trial follows an initial sea examination in October, which primarily targeted overall performance and maneuverability. Collectively, these trials affirm Mein Schiff Relax‘s readiness to utilize dual-fuel engines compatible with marine diesel as well as low-emission bio- and e-LNG fuels.
Georgios Vagiannis, Director of Newbuild at TUI Cruises, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability, indicating that Mein Schiff Relax not only introduces a new class of ship but also marks a significant leap towards sustainable maritime operations.
As the lead vessel of TUI Cruises’ new InTUItion class, Mein Schiff Relax showcases numerous innovations, including:
- LNG Propulsion: This technology supports the use of bio- and e-LNG, aligning with TUI Cruises’ goals for climate-neutral cruising.
- Azipod Propeller Nacelles: These enhancements improve maneuverability and operational efficiency.
- High-Tech Navigation Systems: Advanced technology in the bridge boosts safety and navigation capabilities.
In addition to technological advancements, the ship features redesigned outdoor spaces, new dining and bar concepts, and enhanced entertainment options for guests.
After its inaugural spring in 2025, Mein Schiff Relax will cruise on itineraries throughout the western Mediterranean, before relocating to the Canary Islands for its first winter season from 2025 to 2026. The ship is poised to become a leading example of sustainable cruising within TUI Cruises’ offerings.
