Rough Seas Lead to Vehicle Damage and Injuries on Interislander Ferry

Several vehicles were damaged and a passenger suffered a minor injury aboard the Interislander ferry Kaitaki during its journey from Wellington to Picton, New Zealand, on the morning of December 27, 2024.

The New Zealand-flagged ferry set off from Wellington Harbour at 8:45 AM and faced significant rolling conditions near Karori Lighthouse, which caused some passenger vehicles to shift and incur damage. Upon arrival in Picton, affected customers were provided support while a thorough assessment of the situation began. The injured passenger was promptly given medical assistance by the crew.

In light of the turbulent weather, which includes heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and large swells primarily impacting central New Zealand, Interislander issued guidelines for managing seasickness on upcoming sailings. Additionally, the operator announced the cancellation of the early morning 6:15 AM sailing from Picton to Wellington, along with the 11:00 AM return trip, due to the rough seas.
