Huna Totem Unveils $80M Cruise Terminal: A Game Changer for Visitor Experiences in Whittier, Alaska
Huna Totem Corporation has unveiled an impressive new cruise terminal in Whittier, Alaska, a venture costing $80 million. Nestled in the picturesque Prince William Sound, approximately 60 miles southeast of Anchorage, the new facility features a double-berth pier and welcomed its first ship in September.
The project emerged from a partnership between the City of Whittier, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), and Huna Totem Corporation. Encompassing 20 acres of private land, the terminal is set against a backdrop of serene waters and striking mountains. While NCLH possesses the main scheduling rights for the terminal, it is open to other cruise lines as well.
This new terminal complements the existing dock used exclusively by Princess Cruises and Holland America Line, providing cruise lines with additional port options after Juneau imposed a cap on daily ship visits. The terminal boasts a flexible design that allows for the creation of hospitality service areas and regional excursion bookings, with plans to showcase local art and historical imagery, enriching visitors’ experiences.
In terms of infrastructure, the terminal will accommodate bus services, with future plans to include rail connections to Anchorage. Huna Totem Corporation owns additional land for potential future development, including retail spaces and dining options, as well as a cultural center. Upcoming enhancements also include fire pits, picnic areas, and diverse tour offerings such as kayak rentals and charter fishing.
For 2025, the terminal is anticipated to host 27 calls, serving vessels from Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas, and Oceania. Huna Totem Corporation, a business founded by approximately 1,600 Indigenous shareholders from Hoonah, has a history of developing cruise facilities in Alaska, including the well-known Icy Strait Point, which opened in 2004. The Whittier terminal continues Huna Totem’s commitment to promoting sustainable tourism and fostering community engagement in Alaska’s coastal areas.
