Introducing the New Ferry Service Connecting Trieste with Croatia and Slovenia

In the summer of 2025, a new seasonal ferry service will launch, connecting Port Trieste in Italy with key destinations across Croatia. This development aims to enhance maritime accessibility in the Adriatic region, improving transport options for both tourists and residents alike.

The service will not only serve Trieste but will also make stops in Piran, Slovenia, as well as Porec, Rovinj, and Mali Losinj in Croatia. Travelers can expect two weekly departures for each of the four routes: Trieste–Piran–Porec–Rovinj, Trieste–Rovinj–Mali Losinj, Trieste–Porec–Piran, and Trieste–Piran–Rovinj. Operations are set to occur from June 26th to early September, with an initial contract planned for three summer seasons from 2025 to 2027, with an option to extend into 2028.

This initiative is backed by the Italian government, highlighting its dedication to reviving a historical link between Trieste and Istria, which dates back to 1963. The original service utilized the motor vessel Edra, covering major towns along Istria’s western coast until the early 1990s, with the last regular ferry, Dionea, ceasing operations in 1990.

The new service not only honors the region’s maritime history but also provides a modern solution to improving connectivity between Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia, which could foster cultural exchange and boost tourism.

In 2023, Croatia achieved approximately 19.5 million tourist arrivals, a 9.7% increase from the previous year, with its capital Zagreb drawing over 1.3 million visitors. Rovinj emerged as a top destination in the Istria County. Similarly, Italy saw around 57.3 million international tourist arrivals in 2023, maintaining its status as the world’s fourth most visited nation. The country’s tourism industry contributed significantly to its economy, representing 10.5% of its GDP.

By December 6, 2024, Italy’s tourism numbers were estimated to have risen to 62.2 million arrivals, signaling a strong recovery from the pandemic effects in the travel sector and reestablishing Italy’s reputation as an attractive global travel destination.
