Tragic Accident at St. Maarten Cruise Port Claims Life of 82-Year-Old Passenger
The St. Maarten Police Force (KPSM) reported a tragic incident at the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facilities on December 26, 2024, where an 82-year-old cruise ship passenger lost her life. The accident occurred around 5:00 p.m. when the passenger, who was using an electric wheelchair, fell into the sea.
Emergency responders were quickly dispatched, but despite their efforts, the individual could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest that a malfunction in the electric wheelchair may have played a role in the incident.
The KPSM expressed their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. While the identity of the victim and the cruise ship involved have not been officially confirmed, it is suspected that she could have been a passenger aboard AIDA Cruises’ AIDAmar.
This incident emphasizes the pivotal need for rigorous safety protocols at cruise facilities to safeguard the well-being of all visitors. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are currently underway.
