Huna Totem Unveils $80M Cruise Terminal: Transforming Visitor Experiences in Whittier, Alaska

Huna Totem Corporation has unveiled a new cruise terminal in Whittier, Alaska, marking a significant milestone for the region. This $80 million facility, located in the serene Prince William Sound about 60 miles southeast of Anchorage, features a double-berth pier and welcomed its inaugural vessel in September.

The development of the terminal is a collaborative effort involving the City of Whittier, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), and Huna Totem Corporation. Occupying 20 acres of private land, the terminal is strategically positioned amidst peaceful waters and stunning mountains. Although NCLH has priority scheduling rights, other cruise lines can utilize the terminal as well.

This new terminal complements Whittier’s existing dock, which serves exclusively Princess Cruises and Holland America Line, particularly important as cruise lines seek additional ports following Juneau’s implementation of a daily cap for five ships.

The terminal is designed with versatile spaces, incorporating movable partitions to establish areas for hospitality services and regional excursion bookings. Future enhancements may include displays of historical imagery and local artwork, intended to deepen guests’ appreciation for Whittier’s rich heritage.

Additional infrastructure provisions include bus services, with future plans for rail connections to Anchorage. Huna Totem has ample land available for future enhancements, envisioning amenities like retail outlets, dining options, and a cultural center. Immediate goals involve the addition of fire pits, picnic areas, and expanding tour services, such as kayak and JetSki rentals, charter fishing, and wildlife observation opportunities.

In 2025, the terminal is anticipated to host 27 vessel calls, welcoming ships from Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas, and Oceania. Huna Totem Corporation, which has about 1,600 Indigenous shareholders from Hoonah, has a history of developing cruise facilities in Alaska. This includes Icy Strait Point, launched in 2004, and Port Klawock on Prince of Wales Island, which began operations in 2024. The opening of the Whittier terminal reiterates Huna Totem’s dedication to sustainable tourism and community engagement in Alaska’s coastal areas.
