Puerto Plata Gears Up for a Cruise Tourism Boom in 2025

Puerto Plata, known as "The Bride of the Atlantic," is gearing up for an exciting start to 2025, anticipating a substantial increase in cruise ship activity. A total of 81 cruise ships are scheduled to dock at its primary ports, Amber Cove and Taino Bay. In January alone, Amber Cove is expected to welcome 27 vessels while Taino Bay will accommodate 54 ships, providing a boost to the local economy and offering thousands of passengers the chance to explore the province’s rich scenic and cultural attractions.

Carlos Atahualpa Paulino, the Regional Director of the Ministry of Tourism, underscored the economic significance of these cruise ship arrivals, emphasizing how they will help solidify Puerto Plata’s status as a premier tourism destination and contribute to economic growth in the region.

Amber Cove, which has been operational since 2015, has played a critical role in driving cruise tourism in northern Dominican Republic. The development of Taino Bay in 2021 has further enhanced the region’s capacity to attract cruise visitors.

In 2024, the Dominican Republic saw over 11 million tourist arrivals, significantly contributing approximately $26 billion to its GDP and creating nearly 949,000 jobs. As Puerto Plata continues to embrace sustainable tourism practices and expand its offerings, it remains central to the Dominican Republic’s broader tourism and economic strategies.
