Tragic Accident at St. Maarten Cruise Port Claims Life of 82-Year-Old Passenger

The Sint Maarten Police Force (KPSM) reported a tragic accident on December 26, 2024, at the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facility in Philipsburg, resulting in the death of an 82-year-old cruise passenger.

Around 5:00 PM local time, the passenger, who was using an electric wheelchair, fell into the sea. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene, but efforts to resuscitate the individual were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the location. Preliminary investigations suggest that a malfunction in the electric wheelchair may have played a role in the accident.

Authorities expressed their condolences to the deceased’s family during this difficult time. While the identity of the passenger and the specific cruise ship involved have not been officially confirmed, it is believed by some witnesses that he may have been a guest aboard AIDA’s ship AIDAmar.

On that day, several other cruise ships were visiting the port, including the Queen Mary 2, Emerald Azzurra, P&O Arvia, Symphony Of The Seas, and Celebrity Ascent.
