Valenciaport Launches Initiative to Create Independent 5G Network

Valenciaport is set to establish its own independent 5G network, ensuring autonomy from external telecommunications providers. This new network will connect over 25,000 devices, ranging from smartphones and vehicles to surveillance cameras, environmental sensors, drones, and security services. The initiative aims to propel the Port of València towards a digital transformation, ultimately positioning it as a leading Smart Port, also known as Port 4.0.

According to Enrique Belda, the Director of the Port Authority of València (PAV), the implementation of 5G technology will shape the port’s technological future, enhancing connectivity and driving innovation. The network will operate on n40 frequencies and will feature more than 15 base stations, providing extensive coverage of the port’s operational areas.

The project, budgeted at nearly €6 million and co-funded by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), includes a private core configuration, Radio Access Network (RAN), and routing/switching components, supporting speeds up to 10 Gbps. Additionally, it can accommodate at least 25,000 connected devices and will initially operate on a 20 MHz bandwidth, which can be expanded to 40 MHz.

To validate the network’s capabilities, two specific use cases will be developed: one focusing on police surveillance and the other on remote maintenance. Valenciaport intends to leverage its 5G network to offer advanced services, which include improved passenger connectivity, digital twins, intelligent surveillance, collision risk detection, and stowage planning.

Joan Meseguer Llopis, the senior manager of innovation projects at the Valenciaport Foundation, emphasized the pioneering nature of this project in Europe, highlighting the significant factors such as the port’s scale, the comprehensive implementation of 5G technology, and the unique use of the self-provisioning model of the radio spectrum.
