Attica Group Boosts Mediterranean Ferry Fleet with €7M Investment in Advanced Connectivity

The Greek company Attica Group/Attica Holdings SA, which oversees a number of cruiseferry fleets including Superfast Ferries, Blue Star Ferries, and Hellenic Seaways, has made a significant investment in its maritime operations. They signed a five-year agreement, with the option to extend for another five years, to enhance wireless communications across their fleet of over 40 ferries. The total investment for this advanced connectivity initiative is approximately €7 million (around US$7.2 million).

The deal, struck with Orbyt Global and Telenor Maritime, aims to equip these ferries with a hybrid connectivity platform that will provide both passengers and crew with seamless internet access, mobile services, and Wi-Fi. Attica Group’s CEO, Panos Dikaios, highlighted the growing necessity of reliable internet onboard, not just for enhancing passenger experience but also for enabling crew members to stay connected with their families and access entertainment during their downtime.

Orbyt Global will utilize Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellite constellation to deliver high-speed, low-latency connectivity, while Telenor Maritime will integrate this with geostationary satellites and terrestrial networks into one cohesive system. This smart system will choose the most efficient and cost-effective connection available in real-time.

Further supporting the connectivity goal, Telenor Maritime’s Wi-Fi services will ensure reliable coverage throughout the ferries, reinforced by advanced routers and servers installed on each vessel. The system is also designed to collaborate with approximately 400 global roaming providers, granting passengers and the crew access to a diverse range of mobile network services while at sea.
