Funchal’s Port Celebrates Milestone: 700,000 Cruise Ship Tourists in Record-Breaking Year

Port Funchal in Madeira has set a remarkable record by welcoming 700,000 cruise ship tourists in 2024, a significant increase from the previous year’s 624,000. This achievement was celebrated on December 30, 2024, with the arrival of a passenger on the AIDACosma ship, which had just journeyed from Gran Canaria.

The momentous occasion featured a special presentation from Paulo Fale, Director of Port Operations and Security at APRAM SA, along with Patricia Bairrada, Commercial Director. They honored a German family, who were among the milestone passengers, by gifting them a commemorative plaque and a basket filled with local products, marking their second visit to Madeira.

Throughout 2023, Madeira saw 279 ship arrivals, carrying not only cruise passengers but also 241,995 crew members. This consistent rise in numbers highlights the island’s increasing allure as a cruise destination.

Funchal’s reputation was further solidified on a global level when it earned the "Best Cruise Terminal in the World for Sustainability" award in 2024 from the World Cruise Awards. Madeira has previously received accolades as Europe’s Best Cruise Destination in 2022 and 2023.
