On the evening of January 7, 2025, the cruise ship Crown Princess, heading back to Australia from Fiji, issued an urgent medical evacuation request while approximately 210 nautical miles southeast of the Isle of Pines in New Caledonia. A passenger on board required immediate medical assistance, prompting the alert.
In response, a French Air Force Puma helicopter was dispatched to the ship. Following consultations with the onboard medical staff, it was determined that the passenger needed urgent transfer to Noumea for advanced medical care.
The complex operation unfolded overnight and involved close coordination between the Crown Princess crew and rescue teams. The successful transfer concluded at 5:30 a.m. on January 8, and the patient was subsequently admitted to Medipole Hospital in Noumea.
At the time of the incident, the Crown Princess was on a 13-day roundtrip cruise from Sydney, NSW, themed "New Year," which commenced on December 29, 2024, and is set to conclude on January 11, 2025.
