Costa Smeralda Achieves Milestone with Successful LNG Bunkering in Dubai
Costa Smeralda, a cruise ship operated by Costa Cruises and built in 2019, successfully completed its liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering at Dubai Port. This operation utilized the LNG tanker ship Green Zeebrugge to replenish Costa Smeralda’s three cryogenic steel tanks with 3000 m³ of LNG, ensuring enough fuel for approximately 2.5 weeks of operation.
This achievement marked a significant development in sustainable cruising as Costa Cruises, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation, pioneered the use of LNG technology within Dubai’s maritime infrastructure. The LNG bunkering was made possible through collaboration with logistics provider Monjasa and the Dubai Port Authority, reinforcing Costa’s commitment to environmentally responsible practices in the cruise industry.
Costa Smeralda arrived in Dubai on December 21 after a relocation voyage around Africa. Following its winter season in Dubai, the ship is scheduled to embark on a 37-day journey to Europe and the Mediterranean on March 1, visiting ports including Oman, Mauritius, South Africa, and Morocco, before reaching Genoa on April 7.
Costa’s commitment to innovation in cleaner energy solutions continues to set a high standard for sustainable operations in the cruise sector.
