Royal Caribbean International has alerted guests aboard the Symphony of the Seas regarding two confirmed cases of Legionella. These cases were from separate cruises—one in October and the other in December of 2024. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is still investigating the source of the exposure.

In a letter to passengers, the cruise line reinforced its commitment to health and safety, stating that enhanced sanitation measures have been implemented in accordance with CDC guidelines. Royal Caribbean clarified that the identified cases do not confirm that the bacteria were contracted while on board.

Although the source of the Legionella bacteria is undetermined, Royal Caribbean is taking proactive precautions to ensure guest safety. Legionella can lead to Legionnaires’ disease, which manifests as severe pneumonia when contaminated water droplets are inhaled from sources like hot tubs and pools. While the illness primarily affects those with compromised immune systems or existing health issues, healthy individuals rarely develop severe symptoms. Those affected may experience fever, chills, and muscle aches among other symptoms.

The cruise line reassured passengers that all necessary steps are being taken to safeguard their health and emphasized the dedication of its crew to maintaining rigorous sanitation practices.
