Exciting Updates from Disney Cruise Line: Details on Their Expanding Fleet

Disney Cruise Line recently announced exciting plans to expand its fleet, aiming to grow from six to thirteen ships by 2031. This update was shared during Disney’s fan expo, D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Notably, Disney will construct a fourth Wish-class ship, which will be a sister ship to the existing ones: the Wish, Treasure, and Destiny. Additionally, the cruise line plans to introduce three smaller ships.

The forthcoming ships will complement Disney’s current fleet, including the Disney Treasure, which embarked on its inaugural voyage on December 21, 2024. The Disney Destiny and Disney Adventure are also set to set sail in late 2025 from Fort Lauderdale and Singapore, respectively.

The upcoming unnamed Wish-class ship will weigh in at 144,000 gross tons, be powered by liquefied natural gas, and accommodate up to 4,000 guests, with a slated debut in 2027. The three smaller vessels, intended for release in 2029, 2030, and 2031, are expected to be around 100,000 gross tons each and hold 3,000 passengers. These ships will represent a new class designed to be about 20% larger than Disney’s original ships, such as the Disney Magic and Wonder.

As part of this expansion, Disney is focused on sustainability. The smaller ships will incorporate innovative fuel technologies, enabling them to operate on renewable fuels like hydrotreated vegetable oil and methanol. These adaptations will align with Disney’s environmental goals, including achieving zero waste to landfills by 2030 and eliminating single-use plastics on cruise ships by 2025.

The voyage options for guests will also increase with this expansion. Notably, Disney Cruise Line is set to establish a homeport in Singapore for the first time with the Disney Adventure, and plans to develop a new ship in partnership with Tokyo Disneyland’s operating partner that will home port in Japan.

This expansion reflects Disney’s commitment to family cruising, a market it established in 1998. Despite its relatively small share (2.5% of the total cruise market), the brand’s loyal fan base is a driving force behind this ambitious growth. As Disney continues to develop its fleet, it aims to enhance guest experiences while navigating towards a more sustainable future.
