40+ Passengers Affected by Gastrointestinal Illness on Silversea’s Silver Ray Cruise
An outbreak of gastrointestinal illness has been reported aboard Silversea’s cruise ship, Silver Ray, affecting both passengers and crew. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that 38 passengers and 5 crew members experienced symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal cramps during the voyage, which included a total of 681 guests.
The cause of the outbreak is yet to be identified. The Silver Ray set sail from Callao-Lima, Peru, on January 4, 2025, and is expected to dock in Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on January 20, 2025. In response to this health incident, Silversea has enacted enhanced sanitation protocols. This includes isolating those affected as part of their standard health measures. To date, the cruise line has not released an official statement regarding the situation.
This incident marks the second reported gastrointestinal illness outbreak on a cruise ship in 2025, with 18 such outbreaks documented by the CDC throughout 2024, predominantly linked to norovirus.
