Adora Flora City Ship’s Construction Progresses to Phase 2: Anticipating a 2026 Launch
Chinese officials celebrated a major milestone on January 15, 2025, with the completion of the first phase of construction for China’s second large cruise ship, highlighting the advancement of the country’s shipbuilding sector, particularly in cruise ship manufacturing.
The vessel, named Adora Flora City, is being developed for Adora Cruises, which operates as a subsidiary of CSSC, in partnership with Carnival Corporation as a minority stakeholder. This ship will be the second large ocean-going cruise ship constructed by CSSC.
Project specifications reveal that the Adora Flora City will measure 141,800 GT-tons in volume and is 1,119 feet (341 meters) long, making it 57 feet (17.4 meters) longer than its sister ship, Adora Magic City, while also increasing its passenger capacity to 5,232 guests.
During the recent ceremony, Chinese officials noted that the construction efficiency matches the timelines of leading European shipbuilders, underscoring China’s growing expertise in complex cruise ship technologies, which are notably more sophisticated than those needed for traditional vessel types like containerships and tankers. Such systems often depend on a complex network of suppliers and subcontractors, similar to operations in European shipyards.
CSSC’s initial collaboration with Italy’s Fincantieri helped them cultivate their cruise ship construction know-how. The design of this ship is based on a class previously created by Fincantieri and Carnival Corporation, and utilized by Carnival Cruise Line and Costa Cruises. CSSC has also made significant investments in specialized facilities catering to the unique requirements of cruise ship construction.
Adora Flora City features several design upgrades from its predecessor, including an additional 19 staterooms, bringing the total to 2,144. The atrium lobby has been doubled in size, and enhancements have been made to public spaces, entertainment venues, and leisure areas. One particularly notable addition is the Sea Street Garden, a multifunctional social hub inspired by Guangzhou, designed for various activities throughout the day, including entertainment and social interactions.
Adora Cruises is making strides in China’s cruise market, as exemplified by the launching of the Adora Mediterranea from Guangzhou in 2024, while the Adora Magic City continues to serve passengers from Shanghai, having completed 84 voyages and welcoming around 600,000 tourists in its first year.
The ship has now transitioned into its second construction phase, which will focus on interior decoration, equipment installation, and system commissioning. A key milestone will be the first dock flotation test at the end of April 2025, with anticipation for delivery by late 2026.
