Iceland Introduces Mandatory €18 Daily Fee for Cruise Ship Tourists
Iceland has introduced a new "infrastructure fee" for cruise ship tourists in 2025. This fee replaces the former accommodation tax and is set at 2500 Icelandic Krona (approximately €18) per person per day. It applies to all cruise passengers, regardless of whether they choose to disembark or stay onboard the ship.
For example, guests aboard the MSC Preziosa, which will dock in Iceland starting June 9, 2025, will incur a fee of around €70 for a four-day cruise. This amount will automatically be deducted from their onboard accounts when the ship leaves Icelandic waters. It has been confirmed by MSC that the fee is compulsory for all passengers and does not depend on participation in shore excursions or other land activities.
This fee is part of the Icelandic government’s strategy to handle the increasing influx of tourism and to aid in the enhancement of the island’s infrastructure. The intention behind implementing this charge is to ensure that all cruise visitors contribute equally, helping to alleviate the strain on Iceland’s natural and urban resources as tourist numbers continue to rise.
