Port Valletta Sets New Record for Cruise Passenger Numbers in 2024

In 2024, Malta experienced an extraordinary surge in cruise passenger numbers, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 before the COVID pandemic. This milestone was celebrated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett, and Valletta Cruise Port CEO Stephen Xuereb during a visit to Valletta Cruise Port.

The port recorded over 940,000 passenger movements, marking a 4% increase compared to the 2019 record. Throughout the year, the Valletta Grand Harbour hosted 357 cruise ship arrivals, reinforcing Malta’s status as a major cruise destination in the Mediterranean.

The cruise industry plays a crucial role in Malta’s economy, fostering growth in shipping services, retail, catering, and tourism, particularly in Valletta and the Grand Harbour area. Cruise ship activities contribute approximately EUR 88 million annually to the local economy, with EUR 38 million from passenger spending and EUR 50 million from cruise line expenditures. Deputy Prime Minister Borg reiterated the government’s dedication to supporting this sector and enhancing the experience for cruise visitors to the Maltese Islands.

The Malta Tourism Authority diligently promoted Malta as a premier Mediterranean cruise destination throughout 2024. Their efforts included participation in leading international industry fairs and targeted marketing campaigns, encouraging cruise operators and travelers to add Malta to their itineraries.

Additionally, Minister Bonett highlighted advancements in sustainability, particularly with the introduction of Malta’s shore-to-ship power infrastructure. This system, which can power up to five cruise liners simultaneously, is expected to cut pollution in the Grand Harbour by 90% by 2030, thereby boosting the quality of life for residents in surrounding areas.

Bonett emphasized the strategic significance of the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) project, which makes Malta the first Mediterranean port to implement this technology. This initiative, coupled with the extension of Quay Pinto 4-5, underscores Malta’s commitment to sustainable maritime solutions and the long-term development of its maritime industry.
