British Virgin Islands Celebrates Maiden Call of P&O’s Iona

The British Virgin Islands recently celebrated the maiden call of P&O Cruises’ ship, Iona, which arrived in Tortola on January 23, 2025, with nearly 5,000 guests onboard. This visit marks a significant milestone in the territory’s cruise tourism sector, emphasizing its allure as a leading cruise destination. The Iona is an LNG-powered vessel that embarked on a 35-day Caribbean cruise from Southampton, England, and stayed overnight in Tortola.

The British Virgin Islands Ports Authority (BVIPA) stated that this call demonstrates the BVI’s attractiveness to major cruise lines and reflects its commitment to offering high-quality services. To commemorate the occasion, a plaque was exchanged between the Government and the people of the Virgin Islands and Iona’s Captain Andrew Wolverson. Key figures at the ceremony included Governor Daniel Pruce, Premier Natalio Wheatley, and Minister of Communication and Works Kye Rymer, among others.

This event signifies the British Virgin Islands’ dedication to fostering strong relationships within the cruise industry and capitalizing on future growth opportunities. On January 24, 2025, the Iona was joined by its sister ship, Arvia, at the cruise pier, showcasing the BVI Ports Authority’s operational capacity and commitment to excellent port management. The BVIPA remains focused on enhancing its infrastructure and services to meet the evolving needs of the cruise industry.
