CMP-Copenhagen Malmö Port Sets Ambitious Goal of 1 Million Passengers by 2025
Copenhagen Malmo Port (CMP) reported significant cruise activity in 2024, coming close to welcoming 1 million passengers, and anticipates surpassing that number in 2025.
In 2024, the passenger distribution was as follows: approximately 170,000 in Visby, over 818,000 in Copenhagen, and around 1,700 in Malmo. CMP recorded a total of 280 cruise calls at Copenhagen—comprising 106 turnaround calls and 26 overnight stays—102 visits to Visby (operational from April to October, including December), and 3 calls in Malmo. The year-round operations were marked by consistent calls at Copenhagen each month.
2024 also saw an increase in new vessel deployments, with 9 maiden calls at Copenhagen and 11 at Visby. Recognition came for Copenhagen as Europe’s Leading Cruise Port for 2024 in the World Travel Awards. A major segment of passengers in both ports were German, contributing to a strong European presence.
Looking ahead, CMP forecasts over 1 million passengers and 403 calls for 2025. This includes projections of 850,000 passengers and 295 calls (107 as turnaround) at Copenhagen, and 172,000 passengers with 105 calls at Visby. Copenhagen is expected to maintain its year-round operation, beginning the 2025 season with calls starting on January 3rd. The impact of turnaround passengers is particularly notable for Copenhagen, bolstering the local economy and enhancing its role as a regional transport hub.
A significant development for 2025 is the operational launch of Copenhagen’s shore-power facility, which features 5 connection points at Oceankaj and Langelinie, aiming for full capacity by 2028. Since 2021, CMP has offered shore power to the Oslo-Copenhagen ferry. The renovations of the Langelinie terminals, designed for shore-power and direct sewage connection, will also be completed by 2025. CMP is committed to achieving net-zero CO2 emissions in its operations by that year.
Future plans include continuing strategic partnerships through Cruise Denmark – Copenhagen and Beyond, Cruise Baltic, and Cruise Europe to promote responsible cruise tourism in the Baltic region. Notably, Copenhagen will host the Cruise Europe annual conference in May 2025, marking 33 years since it hosted the inaugural event in 1992.
