Nice Bans Large Cruise Ships to Protect the Glamour of the Riviera from Low-Cost Tourists
Large cruise ships will no longer be permitted to dock in Nice, France, starting this summer as a measure to combat pollution and overtourism in the region. Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice, signed a decree banning “floating hotels” that exceed 900 passengers from docking at the city’s ports. This decision comes after growing criticism of the cruise industry’s environmental impact and the low economic benefits these large ships bring to the popular tourist destination.
Estrosi expressed his frustrations about the cruise industry, emphasizing that the type of tourists these ships attract tends to spend significantly less than other visitors, quoting average spending of €38 for cruise passengers compared to €180 for conference attendees. He articulated a desire to preserve the city’s status by limiting those who contribute to pollution and leave waste behind without participating in the local economy.
The ban affects around 40 cruise ships set to dock during the upcoming summer season. This latest regulation mirrors initiatives taken by other European cities that have previously enacted similar restrictions to protect their environments and local economies.
The Cruise Lines International Association responded to the decision by expressing their disbelief and urging local authorities to reconsider, suggesting that the ban stigmatizes the cruise industry and negatively impacts local economic opportunities.
In close proximity, Villefranche-sur-Mer, which has gained popularity through media portrayals like Netflix’s "Emily in Paris," will also be subject to the new docking bans. This move has been met with a mixed response, with local green party leaders celebrating it as a significant victory for public health and environmental protection.
This shift in policy highlights a broader trend among waterfront cities in Europe seeking to regulate the cruise industry while prioritizing sustainability and the preservation of their unique cultural identities.
