15 Maiden Calls Showcase the Rising Popularity of the Port of Lisbon in 2024
The Port of Lisbon has solidified its reputation as a leading destination for cruise tourism, achieving a record-breaking 763,752 cruise passengers in 2024, surpassing the previous high of 758,328. The port also logged a total of 369 vessel calls, exceeding its prior peak of 353 in 2013. Noteworthy figures also include 591,796 transit passengers— a 7% increase from 2023—110 turnaround calls, and 133 individual cruise ships visiting the port, exceeding the 2019 record of 130.
In terms of demographics, the European market remained predominant, with the UK contributing 41% of arrivals, followed by the USA at 20% and Germany at 14%. Among the year’s highlights were 15 maiden calls, including four newly constructed ships, three of which made their inaugural voyages at Lisbon.
Lisbon made strides in sustainability by launching the OPS Project (Onshore Power Supply), which attracted EUR 14.5 million in funding for providing clean energy to docked vessels, set for completion by 2029. The city also initiated the "Cruises for the Community" program aimed at fostering social integration between cruise lines and the local community. The christening of the eco-friendly hybrid vessel, Silver Ray, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 40%, emphasized Lisbon’s commitment to environmental leadership.
Lisbon holds a leadership position in the Cruise Europe Sustainability Committee, guided by Ana Lourenco, Director of Maritime Tourism, with a focus on promoting sustainable practices within the cruise industry.
Further studies reported that cruise tourism added EUR 794 million to the national GDP in 2023, marking a significant 136% increase from 2019. Environmental efforts were also confirmed, with air quality monitoring showing that pollution levels around the Lisbon Cruise Terminal adhered to European and national standards.
In recognition of its accomplishments, Lisbon was named the Best Cruise Destination in Europe, and its Cruise Terminal received the title of Best Cruise Terminal in Europe for the second consecutive year at the World Cruise Awards.
With a forward-thinking strategy committed to innovation and sustainability, the Port of Lisbon continues to enhance its contribution to Portugal’s tourism and economy, setting an example for responsible practices in the cruise sector.
