Damen Unveils Germany’s First Fully-Electric Catamaran Ferry: The E-KAT for Reederei Norden-Frisia
On January 15, 2025, Damen Shipyards Group delivered Germany’s first fully electric catamaran ferry, known as the E-Kat, to Reederei Norden-Frisia. The vessel’s transfer from Rotterdam, Netherlands to Norddeich-Norden, Germany took place on January 22.
The E-Kat made its way home by being towed from Rotterdam to Borkum Island in the North Sea. It then traveled the remaining distance to Norderney Island and Norddeich under its own electric propulsion. This new ferry will serve the route between Norddeich and Norderney in the East Frisian Wadden Sea.
Constructed from lightweight aluminum, the 32-meter catamaran features twin hulls and a shallow draft of just 1.2 meters. It can carry up to 150 passengers and operates at speeds of up to 12 knots. Its propulsion system includes two 600 kW electric motors, along with two 75 kW electric bow thrusters to enhance maneuverability. The battery system, developed by Dutch company EST-Floattech, utilizes Octopus High Energy technology with a capacity of 1.8 MW.
Designed for a 30-minute crossing between Norddeich and Norderney, the ferry allows for a 28-minute turnaround at each port for passenger disembarkation and boarding. During this time, the E-Kat will recharge its batteries using shore power connections, ensuring a round trip of approximately 11 kilometers (7 miles) is completed with zero CO2 emissions.
Built at Damen’s shipyards in Poland and the Netherlands, the ferry recently underwent successful acceptance trials that confirmed its operational readiness, including full-power charging tests at port. The E-Kat is expected to schedule up to eight round trips daily during peak season.
Part of AG Reederei Norden-Frisia’s commitment to achieve zero emissions, the E-Kat will operate with renewable energy sourced from photovoltaic systems installed at facilities in Norddeich and on Norderney. This initiative aligns with the company’s long-term vision of creating a self-sufficient cycle for electricity production and consumption.
The launch of this innovative vessel marks a significant advancement toward sustainable maritime transport, demonstrating how electric propulsion can effectively reduce environmental impact in passenger ferry operations.
