Port of Bilbao (Spain) Takes Major Steps Forward with Shore Power and Solar Energy Integration

Port of Bilbao in Spain has received the green light to construct a photovoltaic solar plant aimed at providing renewable energy for cruise ships docked at two of its cruise terminals, Getxo 2 and Getxo 3. This initiative is a vital part of a broader strategy to implement a shore power supply system powered by sustainable energy, contributing to the maritime industry’s sustainability goals.

The electrification project, backed by funding from both the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and the Bilbao Port Authority, is currently in the tender phase. Port officials estimate that it will take around six months for planning and approvals, followed by a 24-month installation period. The electrification and solar panel installations are expected to be fully operational by the year 2027.

The upgraded cruise terminal will include three shore power connection points to allow two vessels to connect simultaneously. At the Getxo 3 berth, two connections will be available, though only one will be active at any given time. These connection points promise operational flexibility, incorporating a mobile system with a 50-meter range on either side, covering a total width of 100 meters per unit. They will support supply voltages of both 6.6 kV and 11 kV with frequencies of 50 Hz or 60 Hz and will have a maximum installed capacity of 16 MVA per berth.

The solar plant will be situated on top of the terminal’s car park, generating a total output of 0.5 megawatts. While the exact number of solar panels is still to be confirmed, they will extend the full length of the parking area to maximize renewable energy production.

In a significant move on November 28th, Spain’s Council of Ministers approved a EUR 13 million investment for the “BilbOPS” project, reinforcing the country’s commitment to sustainable port operations.

Alongside infrastructure enhancements, the Port of Bilbao is also enhancing its attractiveness to cruise visitors. One initiative includes collaborations with the Athletic Club Bilbao, a storied football club noted for its exclusive policy of recruiting players from the Basque region. The club now offers guided tours of its museum and stadium, priced at EUR 15, which includes an English audio guide. Tours are available daily, except Mondays and match days, accommodating ample coach parking.

Through the BilbOPS project and improved local experiences, the Port of Bilbao is dedicated to establishing itself as a leader in environmentally friendly and passenger-centric cruise operations.
