15 Maiden Calls Showcase the Port of Lisbon’s Rising Popularity in 2024

The Port of Lisbon has marked a significant achievement in cruise tourism, reaching new operational highs in 2024. During this year, the port welcomed 763,752 cruise passengers, breaking the previous record of 758,328 set in 2023. Overall, vessel calls numbered 369, surpassing the prior peak of 353, and transit passengers increased by 7% to 591,796. Additionally, turnaround calls rose to 110, and the number of individual cruise ships visiting climbed to 133, exceeding the 2019 record.

The European market remained the predominant source of cruise passengers, with arrivals from the UK making up 41%, followed by the USA at 20% and Germany at 14%. Notably, 2024 saw 15 maiden calls, including four newly constructed ships, three of which were on their inaugural voyages.

Lisbon is also making strides in sustainability. In 2024, the port launched the OPS Project (Onshore Power Supply), securing EUR 14.5 million in funding to provide clean energy to docked ships, with completion expected by 2029. The "Cruises for the Community" initiative was introduced to strengthen community ties and social integration. The christening of the eco-friendly hybrid vessel, Silver Ray, which lowers greenhouse gas emissions by 40%, underscored the port’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Under the leadership of Ana Lourenco, the port has taken a proactive role in the Sustainability Committee of Cruise Europe, working to promote sustainable practices in the cruise industry. Studies have highlighted that cruise tourism generated EUR 794 million for Portugal’s GDP in 2023, reflecting a 136% increase since 2019. Furthermore, air quality monitoring around the Lisbon Cruise Terminal has confirmed that pollutant levels meet European and national standards.

Lisbon’s efforts have been recognized with several awards, including being named the Best Cruise Destination in Europe and its Cruise Terminal winning the Best Cruise Terminal in Europe award for the second consecutive year at the World Cruise Awards.

With its focus on innovation and sustainability, the Port of Lisbon is solidifying its status as a key player in Portugal’s tourism industry, setting a benchmark for responsible practices in cruise tourism.
