Balearia Introduces First Fully Electric Ferry Route Linking Spain and Morocco

Spanish ferry operator Balearia is set to launch the first completely electric ferry service on the Tarifa-Tangier Ville route, connecting southern Spain and Morocco. Over the next two years, two electric catamarans, each measuring 87 meters and designed by Incat Crowther, will be built at the Armon shipyard in Gijon.

These ferries, capable of reaching speeds up to 26 knots, will accommodate 800 passengers and transport 225 vehicles. Each vessel will be powered by an impressive 16 MW electric propulsion system, supported by an 11,500 kWh battery, allowing for an emission-free journey covering 29 kilometers (or 18 miles). Additionally, the ferries will be equipped with diesel engines for emergency purposes.

Balearia was awarded a 15-year concession for this route by the Algeciras Bay Port Authority (APBA), emphasizing sustainability as a key selection criterion. Upon entering service, these ferries will recharge during one-hour layovers at both ports, facilitated by autonomous robotic arms linked to onshore power systems. The charging facilities will include 5 MW capacity in Tarifa and 8 MW in Tangier, enabling a quick recharge within 40 minutes.

The project also involves a significant investment of EUR 62 million for the electrification of the docks in Tarifa and Algeciras, alongside enhancements to Tarifa’s port access. The combined battery systems from the vessels and shore facilities will offer a storage capacity equivalent to that of 765 electric vehicles.

This initiative, driven by both private and public sector investments, anticipates serving approximately 4 million passengers each year. Andalusia’s Minister of Tourism and External Affairs praised Balearia and the APBA for this innovative step towards a sustainable intercontinental ferry service. Balearia’s president, Adolfo Utor, highlighted the initiative’s potential to boost economic activity and job creation along the route.
