RCI-Royal Caribbean Teams Up with MARES Center for Coastal Ecosystem Restoration in Mahahual/Costa Maya
RCI-Royal Caribbean International has formed a significant partnership with the MARES Center aimed at restoring and safeguarding coastal ecosystems in Mahahual/Costa Maya, located in Quintana Roo, Mexico. This initiative is part of Royal Caribbean Group’s SEA the Future vision, emphasizing sustainable tourism, local community involvement, and environmental stewardship.
Royal Caribbean has committed $50,000 towards a restoration effort that focuses on crucial ecosystems, including mangroves, coastal dunes, and seagrass meadows. These ecosystems are vital for marine biodiversity, protecting shorelines, and supporting coral reef health. The project plans to rehabilitate 20 hectares of essential habitat through initiatives such as restoring hydrological flow, replanting native species, and other conservation activities. Local community members will have the opportunity to take part in the project, gaining employment and actively contributing to the rehabilitation efforts.
The collaboration also seeks to promote community engagement by providing environmental education and skills training. Workshops will be organized to teach children, residents, and local business employees about conservation practices. Additionally, a training program will empower local women with diving and marine restoration skills to enhance their prospects in eco-tourism and sustainability-focused vocations.
The project’s implementation is scheduled to kick off in 2025, pending necessary ecological evaluations and preparations. Royal Caribbean and the MARES Center will keep the public informed about the project’s progress and its impact throughout the year.
This effort aligns with Royal Caribbean’s extensive dedication to sustainability, which has been in place for over 30 years, starting with the establishment of its Save the Waves recycling initiative and the appointment of the first Environmental Officer aboard a cruise ship. The company has made strides in environmental innovation, focusing on energy efficiency, improved water treatment, and waste reduction strategies. As part of its overall sustainability objectives, Royal Caribbean is targeting net-zero emissions by 2050 under its Destination Net Zero initiative.
Through its partnership with the MARES Center, Royal Caribbean underscores its commitment to responsible tourism, merging ecological restoration with community-based conservation efforts, which are designed to yield enduring environmental and economic benefits.
