Italian Coast Guard Carries Out Medical Evacuation from Costa Toscana

On February 5th, as the Costa Toscana cruise ship traveled approximately 20 miles south of Capo Teulada, Sardinia, while making its journey from Palma de Mallorca to Palermo, a medical emergency arose. A 33-year-old female passenger suffered a stroke, prompting the officers aboard to alert the Cagliari Coast Guard.

In response, the Coast Guard dispatched an AW139 Nemo 11-05 helicopter from the Decimomannu Air Section. Upon arrival, the helicopter crew conducted a successful winch operation to hoist the patient aboard, prioritizing her stability before swiftly transporting her to Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari.

The complexity of the medical evacuation was acknowledged in the Coast Guard’s official report, indicating the patient’s critical condition and rapid health decline. The onboard command’s timely decision to contact the Coast Guard played a crucial role in the patient’s successful rescue and subsequent medical care.

At the time of the incident, Costa Toscana was on a seven-day Mediterranean roundtrip cruise from Palermo.
