Exploring Europe: AmaWaterways and Smithsonian Journeys Unite for Unforgettable River Cruises

AmaWaterways is partnering with Smithsonian Journeys to launch a series of co-branded European river cruises beginning in April 2026. This collaboration will feature 33 departures along prominent rivers in Europe, such as the Danube, Rhine, Douro, Seine, and Rhone, with voyages lasting between eight and 15 days.

Each cruise promises an enriching experience, including lectures and insights from various experts like art historians, archaeologists, and scientists, designed to deepen guests’ understanding of the local history and cultures of the regions visited. Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and president of AmaWaterways, stated that the partnership aims to encourage guests to form a more profound connection with the destinations, blending river cruising expertise with the cultural and educational focus of Smithsonian Journeys.

Walter Littlejohn III, senior vice-president of Smithsonian Journeys, highlighted the excitement of offering authentic learning experiences aboard AmaWaterways’ ships. He mentioned the trips would cater to intellectually curious travelers wanting to explore the rich tapestry of history and culture of countries such as Austria, France, Germany, and Portugal, all through the unique lens of the Smithsonian.

Bookings for these inaugural cruises are already available, and each will offer pre- and post-cruise land packages crafted by an AmaWaterways cruise manager, providing an opportunity for guests to further explore beyond the primary cruise itinerary.
