Fincantieri Signs €9 Billion Agreement with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NCLH) has struck a monumental agreement with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for the construction of four new cruise ships, valued at approximately €9 billion (USD 9.34 billion). This deal marks the largest single order in Fincantieri’s history.

Fincantieri has a long-standing relationship with NCL, having delivered two vessels previously: the Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva. They are currently working on three additional projects, including the Norwegian Aqua, set for delivery in 2025, and the Norwegian Luna, scheduled for 2026.

The new ships will each have a volume of around 226,000 GT with the capacity to accommodate over 4,200 passengers. Construction will take place at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard, and deliveries are planned for 2030, 2032, 2034, and 2036.

This agreement also indicates a strategic partnership focused on expanding NCL’s fleet for its various brands, including Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises. The collaboration aims to prioritize advancements in technology, passenger comfort, and eco-friendly practices.

Fincantieri’s CEO, Pierroberto Folgiero, noted the significance of this deal, reflecting a mutual commitment to the future of maritime travel centered on innovation and sustainability. In addition to shipbuilding, Fincantieri is branching into defense and underwater sectors, having recently acquired Leonardo’s UAS submarine business and expressed interest in partnerships with Thyssenkrupp’s warship division.

Following the announcement, Fincantieri’s stock experienced a notable rise on the Milan stock exchange.
