Italian Coast Guard Performs Medical Evacuation from Costa Toscana
On February 5th, during its voyage from Palma de Mallorca to Palermo, the Costa Toscana, operated by Costa Cruises, encountered a medical emergency approximately 20 miles south of Capo Teulada, Sardinia. A 33-year-old female passenger suffered a stroke while on board.
The ship’s crew promptly alerted the Cagliari Coast Guard’s Operations Section, which quickly dispatched an AW139 Nemo 11-05 helicopter from the Decimomannu Air Section. Upon reaching the ship, the helicopter team executed a winch operation to safely transport the passenger, stabilizing her conditions before taking her to Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari.
The Coast Guard’s report emphasized the operation’s complexity, noting the rapid decline in the passenger’s health, which necessitated immediate action. The onboard command swiftly coordinated with the Cagliari Coast Guard, culminating in the prompt deployment of the helicopter that successfully conducted the rescue.
At the time of the incident, Costa Toscana was on a 7-day Mediterranean cruise round trip from Palermo.
