Italian Coast Guard Performs Swift Medical Evacuation from Costa Toscana
On February 5, 2025, the Costa Toscana cruise ship encountered a critical medical emergency about 20 miles south of Capo Teulada, Sardinia, while heading from Palma de Mallorca to Palermo, Sicily. A 33-year-old female passenger suffered a stroke, prompting immediate action from the ship’s officers who alerted the Cagliari Coast Guard.
In response, the Operations Section quickly dispatched an AW139 Nemo 11-05 helicopter from Decimomannu Air Section for the rescue operation. Upon reaching the ship, the helicopter crew successfully executed a winch operation to hoist the patient into the aircraft. She was then transported to Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari, where she received urgent medical care.
The Coast Guard’s report emphasized the complexity and urgency of the operation, detailing how the onboard crew acted swiftly as the passenger’s health deteriorated. The decision to deploy the helicopter was made based on the critical situation and the expert recommendations from the Coast Guard. At the time of the incident, Costa Toscana was on a week-long Mediterranean cruise returning to Palermo.
