Chennai Port Expands Cruise Terminal to Boost Passenger Experience and Flow

Chennai Port in India is preparing to enhance its cruise terminal to improve passenger flow and access. Despite undergoing modernization seven years ago, currently only 60% of the terminal’s area is in active use, with 40% remaining underutilized.

The expansion plans aim to make embarkation and disembarkation more efficient, allowing travelers to move seamlessly from the entry point through the waiting area to their ships. The existing waiting area, which measures approximately 2880 m2, will be increased by an additional 1500 m2. This expansion will include separate routes for embarkation and disembarkation, designed to speed up passenger movement.

Further upgrades will enhance queuing and seating areas, improve immigration processing, and feature a new escalator on the western side of the terminal to accompany the existing one on the eastern side. There will also be dedicated spaces for duty-free shops and convenience stores.

Work on the expansion is projected to commence by the end of March and should take about six months to complete. Chennai Port currently caters to an average of 35 to 36 vessel calls per year and attracts around 60,000 tourists. Historically, it has connected cruise vessels to various destinations including Trincomalee, Kochi, Mumbai, Singapore, and Visakhapatnam.

Upcoming cruise routes are set to include journeys between Chennai and Trincomalee, with additional services from Yangon to Kochi and Phuket to Colombo.
