Carnival Sunshine Finds a Permanent Homeport in Norfolk, VA: What It Means for Cruise Enthusiasts

Norfolk, Virginia has officially embraced year-round cruising with the Carnival Sunshine establishing a permanent homeport at Half Moone Cruise Center. On February 12, 2025, the 3,700-passenger ship departed for its inaugural weekly cruise, marking the beginning of ongoing operations expected to accommodate around 150,000 cruise passengers annually.

During a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local officials, including Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander, Norfolk’s significance in the cruise industry was highlighted. The permanent homeport status, thanks to Carnival Cruise Line’s commitment, is set to enhance tourism with itineraries covering popular locations in The Bahamas, Bermuda, and the Eastern Caribbean. Starting in September, cruises will also include a visit to Carnival’s new private resort, Celebration Key Bahamas.

The Carnival Sunshine recently underwent extensive refurbishments, significantly upgrading its facilities. Enhancements include a new water park, a redesigned rope course, a revamped mini-golf course, and improved jogging tracks. Moreover, updates to guest cabins and gym equipment, along with a modernized casino, have greatly improved the ship’s overall condition and appeal.
